A recent survey found that a major concern for brides as their big day approaches is a wedding breakout. No woman should have to walk down the aisle with a zit on her cheek. What’s the antidote? Relax! Stress releases the hormone cortisol, and increased levels of cortisol can increase the likelihood of a breakout. To help stay calm, we recommend our patients schedule an appointment for the week of their wedding. Knowing they can see us if they need to for an “emergency zit fix” helps alleviate their worry.
If seeing a dermatologist isn’t an immediate option for you, we recommend this simple, at-home four-step emergency fix:
- Apply ice buffered by a napkin for 10 to 15 minutes to reduce redness and telltale swelling.
- Cleanse and apply a treatment lotion containing sulfur, which can be purchased without a prescription. Sulfur helps to unplug pores and shrink swelling.
- Follow with a product containing 1% hydrocortisone or benzoyl peroxide (both are available over the counter) to keep pores freer and cleaner.
- Apply a thin layer of a medicated concealer.
As time ticks down toward the big event, rest assured you’ll be able to handle any skincare emergency that comes your way and face your big day with confidence.
