This feature highlights the transformative effects Rodan + Fields products can have on people’s skin. This month, in honor of Mother’s Day, Elana Schuldt, Director of Digital Marketing for Rodan + Fields, shares the invaluable advice she received from her mother, Dr. Katie Rodan, growing up and the advice she’ll pass down to her own daughter, Ella, who just turned one last March.

Q.: What is the one piece of skincare advice your mother gave you that you’ve taken to heart over the years?

A.: Stay out of the sun!

Growing up, I was terrified of getting a sunburn that my mom would see. One time, I got such a bad burn on my back during a vacation in Mexico, and I tried to hide it with a big T-shirt. It hurt so bad! In the years since, I’ve followed her lead in staying out of the sun and wearing sunscreen. Whenever I’m outside, I can hear her voice in my head, “Put your sunscreen on.” And I’ve passed this on to my husband and friends. Her diligence has had a ripple effect on us.

Q: What sage advice will you hand down to your daughter?

A.: Sunscreen is the most important thing you can do to protect your skin against aging. I apply it to Ella whenever we’re outside, although she does her best to wiggle away. When we’re outdoors for prolonged periods, I make her wear a hat, which she also pulls off every chance she gets. I look at it as a work in progress!

Q: Do you think mothers should play a more active role in defining their daughter’s skincare habits at a younger age?

A.: Yes, skincare has a huge impact on long-term health and appearance. It should be reinforced whenever possible, but, mostly, kids learn from watching their parents. So I do my best to put good habits into action.

I also learned from my mom that you can’t share all your knowledge from the beginning; you have to adapt the message to where your child is in life. My mom focused me on sun care early to engrain those practices, adding in acne care through my teen years, and then moving toward a focus on reversing sun damage, brightening my complexion and minimizing the signs of aging. Most importantly, she always made it fun. I’ll never forget my 11th birthday party where we tried a mask she was thinking of launching and gave feedback on the smell, color and experience. It was so fun!

Q: In keeping with those recommendations, what are your favorite R+F skincare products?

A.: There are too many to count, honestly. I use REVERSE Regimen, ENHANCEMENTS Mineral Peptides and ESSENTIALS Foaming Sunless Tan regularly, and now am never without SOOTHE Mineral Sunscreen for Ella.

Somehow I missed this on Mother’s Day, but I found it super helpful-

That is GREAT advice in a broad spectrum of life circumstances!

  2. I love the redefine products! I am currently adding in reverse for my sun spots. I also love the self tanner and microdermabrasion paste! I just got my expander kit, and I can’t wait to try all of the new products that I have not had this far!!
